Still need to be cautious as restrictions are lifted, says Council leader
Proceed with caution is the message from the Leader of Charnwood Borough Council as most Covid-19 legal restrictions are lifted from today (July 19).
Cllr Jonathan Morgan says while today is a significant milestone as the country enters Step 4 in the Government’s roadmap, there is a need to remain vigilant and to follow the guidance which remains in place, for instance wearing face coverings in crowded public settings such as public transport.
From today, all legal limits on social contact have been removed. In addition, nightclubs can reopen, and restrictions on large events like weddings and performances are lifted.
Cllr Morgan said: “The lifting of restrictions is a significant milestone but we need to remain cautious as the pandemic is far from over.
“The vaccine programme has helped to get us to this step and that’s why I would strongly urge anyone who has not had the vaccine to get it as soon as possible. Do it to protect yourself, your family and your friends and to help make sure we can continue to live without restrictions.
“The Council has supported communities throughout the pandemic, and we will continue to do so. We will also continue to monitor the situation very closely with partners and take any necessary action to help make sure people remain safe.
“We should also remember those who have lost their lives over the past 16 months. Our thoughts are with the families affected.
“Finally, on behalf of Charnwood Borough Council I would like to thank residents, businesses, partners and organisations for helping each other in these very difficult circumstances. We look forward to continuing working with you to rebuild our communities and local economy.”
It is important we all remember that Covid-19 is still a part of our lives and the Government has issued guidance on how to keep yourself and others safe and are keeping in place these key protections:
testing when you have symptoms and targeted asymptomatic testing in education, high risk workplaces and to help people manage their personal risk.
isolating when positive or when contacted by NHS Test and Trace or when advised to by the NHS COVID-19 app.
border quarantine: for all arriving from red list countries, and for those people arriving from amber list countries, other than those UK residents fully vaccinated in the UK vaccine programme.
cautious guidance for individuals, businesses and the vulnerable whilst prevalence is high including:
whilst Government is no longer instructing people to work from home if they can, Government expects and recommends a gradual return over the summer;
Government expects and recommends that people wear face coverings in crowded areas such as public transport;
being outside or letting fresh air in; and
minimising the number, proximity and duration of social contacts.
encouraging and supporting businesses and large events to use the NHS COVID Pass in high risk settings to help to limit the risk of infection.
