Grab a free tree at sustainability event
in Queen’s Park
Charnwood residents will be able to bag a free tree at a sustainability fair in Queen’s Park later this month.
Charnwood Borough Council along with its open spaces partner idverde will be giving out free trees at the Charnwood Sustainability Fair on Sunday, September 17.
Charnwood Sustainability Fair will take place between 10am-3pm and has been organised by Charnwood Eco Hub, a Loughborough based community interest company. The event will see more than 20 information stalls and activities from local groups and organisations promoting sustainable living.
A repair cafe run by Transition Loughborough will be there and bike checks and repairs will be offered by B-Buddies.
Entry to the event is free and people will also be able to pick up one of the 500 trees which will be given away by the borough council.
Cllr Louise Jones, the Council’s lead member for climate action and net zero said: “The Council’s free tree giveaways are popular with residents, and it is great the Council can attend this event to give them a chance to take a tree away with them. Trees bring a range of positive impacts on the environment, and we want residents to help make the borough even greener by planting a tree at home.”
Cllr Anne Gray, the Council’s lead member for open spaces said: “I’m pleased the event is being hosted in the award-winning Queen’s Park and hope residents will enjoy visiting some of the stalls and get involved in the activities.”
Trees will be handed out on a first come first served basis and there will be four varieties available:
Rowan
Hawthorn
Dogwood
Hazel
Last year the Council gave away 4,000 trees to residents across the borough. Planning is underway to hand out a similar amount during National Tree Week in November.
The trees will be approximately 20cm – 40cm when collected and people will be signposted to a guide on how to plant and look after them.
