Charnwood celebrates Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Residents in Charnwood celebrated Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a number of events across the borough.
There were scores of street parties and celebrations over the bank holiday including the lighting of the beacon in Queen’s Park, Loughborough on Thursday evening which was organised by Charnwood Borough Council.
Loughborough resident Stephen Hutchins, who has served the Queen his whole working life, won a competition to light the beacon.
A Charnwood Heritage Plaque was also unveiled by the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Jennifer Tillotson on Thursday evening.
On Sunday, the Big Lunch had to unfortunately be cancelled due to the weather. Charnwood Museum did remain open throughout the day and hosted a number of children’s activities and Jubilee exhibitions.
The silly chefs were also around Queen’s Park, offering entertainment with balloon modelling for residents.
Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Jennifer Tillotson, said: “It was fantastic to see so many families and residents come down to Queen’s Park over the Jubilee weekend to mark Her Majesty’s reign which is such an amazing achievement.
“We have also enjoyed seeing all the street parties and events that have taken place across Charnwood and hope everyone had a great time celebrating.”
Cllr Jenny Bokor, the council’s lead member for Loughborough said: “These events were a great way to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
“Thank you to everyone who came out to Queen’s Park, I am sure you enjoyed the events just as much as we did.”
Mr Hutchins, who celebrates his 70th birthday this year, said he was honoured to light the beacon: “I have had the honour of serving Her Majesty my whole working career and I am pleased to have been recognised in lighting the beacon with the Mayor of Charnwood.
“It was a proud moment and was great to have my family here to watch.”
Mr Hutchins, served in both the Armed Forces and the police.
The Charnwood Heritage Plaque was unveiled by the Mayor and marks the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It reads ‘Celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, marking 70 years of service’
