Service to be held for Holocaust Memorial Day 2023
An annual service to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day will take place at the bandstand in Queen’s Park in Loughborough.
The event on Friday, January 27 at 12pm, will see the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Jennifer Tillotson read a statement of commitment.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend the service and to lay a pebble on the commemoration stone as a mark of respect to those who have lost their lives during the Holocaust.
The day is recognised across the world to remember the six million Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other people killed from 1933-1945 under the Nazi persecution and in genocides across the world since.
Cllr Tillotson, said: “This is such an important event to remember those who lost their lives and to show our support for an important cause.
“We must continue to stand up against hatred prejudice and discrimination of any group whether that be race, ethnicity, gender, or sexuality.
“It would be fantastic to see as many residents as possible, attend the event to show that Charnwood is supporting an important day of remembrance.”
The statement of commitment that Cllr Tillotson will read, talks about the need to remember holocausts of the past, those who died and to ensure that we educate future generations.
The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘Ordinary People’ which encourages the public to speak out and stand up to prejudice and hatred.
More can be found out about the ‘Ordinary People’ theme on the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s website: https://www.hmd.org.uk/what-is-holocaust-memorial-day/this-years-theme/
